Sir Hook I'm No Lollipop Man of Warrick
ahha...:)) once again....out of context of a sentance, they do look almighty weird...but yep....they are correct..(.if a lot of Cockney in there ) ...
ReplyDeleteexcept for ( as previously discussed Sir Hookster ) the word Slapper which isn't used as flirt..and the nearest translation to US Speak, (as this is a family show.)..would be a very overworked Hooker or nymhomaniac.
I do find, as I also write to the US a lot, that i pre-translate most of the difficult stuff...and they have gradually found their way into my speech, so i do tend to talk about Gas rather than petrol, much to people's annoyance here.
In the first set you gave us Hooky you admitted surpise that we seemed to have at least three versions of being drunk... well sorry to surprise you more, but we have way more than that...try:
Inebriated,
Intoxicated,
Pissed,
Pissed as a newt,
Brahms and Liszt,
Blootered,
Three sheets to the wind,
Rat-arsed,
Tipsy,
Drunk as a Lord,
Under the table,
Boozed Up,
The Worse for wear,
Under the influence,
In one's cups,
Sozzled,
Soused,
Blind drunk,
Dead Drunk,
Lit up,
Oiled,
Blotto,
Wide Eyed and legless.
and best of all......
Tired and Emotional.
The Yanks of the other hand have way more words than the english for a) your rear end, and b) being sick, many of which we are now approriating.
a)
Butt,
Keyster,
Hiney
Fanny
ass
tush
bootie
( note Fanny in the UK doesn't mean the same as in the US and indeed means a woman's private parts...so if you come here asking for a fanny pack, you'll be walking away with a box of tampons. )
B)
Hurl
Barf
Chuck
Yack
Blow Chunks
Gack
nausea
So while Shakespeare spins in his grave, i bid you adieu.
Sir Dayvd ( seperated by a common language ) of Oxfordshire.
Thanks Sir D for contributing more to our common-uncommon language.
ReplyDeleteActually, there is another one for rear end that we're fond of here that you might not be aware of...love cushion. Or as we use it sometimes...more cushion for the pushin'.
It seems we share Tipsy, Soused, Blind Drunk and Dead Drunk; however, there is a term we used in our spotty youth days...Blasted...that might be new to you.
Sir Hook I'm Soon to Be Drunk as a Wide Eyed and Legless Lord of Warrick
