Ashes to Ashes...The Dust from the Baby Boomer's Bust

Yesterday I took full part in Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday, the gluttony of food and drink that proceeds Lent and Ash Wednesday. I met Sir Duke and Sir Tigger at Ollie's for some Cajun food and fun for lunch. Joining us where their fathers, 87 and 80.

I was reminded of how much I missed my father, who passed away at 79, and of the sacrifice and energy that generation brought to Amer
ica in their time of crisis. Now that mantle is passed on to us to carry.

I was reminded that the "Me" generation were very fortunate; often given whatever we wanted, or at least had the opportunity to strive towards what we wanted. I believe that the ensuing greed and corruption that we now find ourselves in is an unpleasant side effect of the Boomer generation's excess.

The dust from the baby boomer's bust has created the ashes from which we must rise from once again. I remain hopeful, after watching President Obama address the nation from Congress last night, that we can put aside differences and find the common ground to begin the process of re-creation and resurrection.

I take the ashes at Ash Wednesday this morning at St. John with that as my prayer and my hope.

  1. Sir Hook,

I missed the speech last night and the usual "here's what you're about to hear, here's what you heard" news reporting following by the counterpoint of "I know you heard this, but what you didn't hear was (fill in the blank with opposing party's counterpoint scare-tactics).

Let's hope we all can get along long enough to fix this mess. I wish President Obama nothing but success.
