Fund-a-mental / Fund-a-middle

As Sir Dayvd has given me the correct information on the Australian band, Mental as Anything. This is the cover of one of their CD's titled "Fundamental". Truer words have never been uttered together; "fundamental is mental as anything."

I have been contemplating the many variations of fundamental, which in itself, is a huge oxymoron because fundamentally, fundamentals are narrow in vision.

The Oxford American Dictionary describes fundamental as: "forming a necessary base or core; of central importance • so basic as to be hard to alter, resolve, or overcome"

Just as the moderates across the globe have lost their voice and have become the silent majority, so too we have allowed the very word "fundamental" to be hijacked from our language to describe those who are righteous and right. Just ask them! Do they know what the word really means? Do we?

It seems to me that we should all take the Oxford American Dictionary description literally, to use a favored word of fundamentals. We are challenged today as a species to form a necessary base of central importance...for all! We are challenged today as a species to make the rights and freedom of all such a core message that those freedoms will never be altered or overcome in the future. Can we do it? "Yes we can!", to coin the battle cry of Barrack Husein Obama.

As an American the word fundamental has truly become more like "Fund A Mental". Yes Monty Python, "we have gone completely mental!" It is time to "Fund A Middle", to give voice to the silent majority, to change the course of this nation, this world, this species.

Besides, there is always so much more variety and spice to life when you embrace the way of a "Funinthemiddle"!

  1. I was thinking of this the other day (well, the idea of "middle") when I read the Supreme Court narrowly voted that the D.C. ban on handguns is unconstitutional.

Some people would tell you that we should ban all handguns. Others will tell you that it's a "free" country and we should be free to carry an AK47 assault rifles around if we want (or M16A1, if you want to keep with fundamentally American).

True, if the U.S. were still the home of the free, the vote would have been 9 to 0 and there never would have been a ban in the first place.

Me? I find myself somewhere in the middle. I own a couple of guns, but I don't hunt or carry one. I believe that Americans should have a right to own guns, but that there should be some laws (read that limits) on types, registration of, and sales to. For example, as a society, do we really want convicted violent criminals to be able to legally purchase a 9mm and unlimited ammunition when he/she gets back on the streets?

Somewhere we need to balance our rights with the rights of others -- Seems fundamental to me that we should be free to do whatever we want to do as long as it doesn't infringe on the rights of others
(Don't ask me how to go about doing that).

So, here I am. As Dylan would say:
Clowns to the left of me!
    Jokers to the right.
Here I am stuck in the middle with you!

  2. Good Blogging Hookmeister...i'll have to think about that one a bit...

In the mean time you'd expect me as an experienced Music Reviewer to haul you up on the Australian band. T'is the other way round me old mate.. They are called "Mental As Anything" and they are a new wave rock band that specialise in songs with a punning double meaning lyricism ..so to to add "Fun Da" to their name as the album title is pretty standard for them.

They had a massive hit here in the eighties called " Live it up " which is often ribaldly called "Get em off" in bar-rooms sing-alongs... as the Chorus goes...
" hey you with the sad face,
    Come up to my place
    and live it up."

I'll leave you more exeprienced Knights to make the switch.
